Frequently Asked Questions

  • "How does the 007 fit compared to your other jeans?"
The 007 is our relaxed fit with a higher rise than the 001. It sits on the waist, has room through the thigh and a gentle taper to the hem. If you prefer a cleaner, slimmer leg, go for the 001. If you like a bit more ease and comfort without losing shape, the 007 is the right choice.

  • "Will they always feel stiff?"
No. Our denim ranges from 13.5–14.5oz, so it will feel firm at first – but the stiffness comes mainly from finishing and starch used during weaving, not just weight. As you wear them, that starch and some surface pigment loosen up. After the first wash, they soften significantly and continue to mould to your body, becoming more comfortable week by week. How our denim is woven actually makes it one of the softest raw denims you can get.

  • "Will they shrink when washed?"
Yes, but mainly in the length.
We cut our jeans with a 34" inseam to allow for around 1" of shrinkage after the first wash at 30°C, so they typically settle at roughly a 33" leg. Any change in the waist is minimal and will quickly loosen back out with wear.

  • "How should I wash them – and how often?"
There’s no strict ritual required. But, we recommend holding off the first wash for a while if you want stronger, more defined fades. When it’s time, turn them inside out, wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, and hang dry (no tumble dryer). We recommend a denim specific detergent, like this. If they get dirty before that, wash them – they’re made to be lived in, not tiptoed around.

  • "What’s special about Japanese selvedge denim?"
Japan adopted American denim as part of its post-war clothing culture, then took the craft to an obsessive level. Mills like Kuroki in Okayama focus on narrow shuttle looms, rope-dyeing and small-batch production, prioritising depth of colour, character and longevity over volume.
For us, Japanese denim offers a combination that’s hard to beat: beautiful fades, serious durability and a level of precision that honours the craft of making jeans properly.

  • "What does sanforized' mean?"
“Sanforized” denim has been pre-treated to stabilise shrinkage before it’s cut and sewn. In practice, this means less dramatic shrinking after the first wash and more predictable sizing over the life of the jean. Raw sanforized denim will still tighten slightly, especially in the leg length, but you avoid the extreme shrink you might have seen with vintage, unsanforized jeans.

  • "Can I get them hemmed?"
Yes. The jeans are cut with a 34" inseam so most people can hem to their ideal length. If you’d like to keep the original chain-stitch hem (and selvedge ID visible when cuffed), we recommend using a denim specialist or our in-store service, rather than a standard high-street tailor.
