Japanese Denim / 5 Years Guaranteed

The Birch Ecru is 13.5oz ecru selvedge denim woven on narrow looms by Nihon Menpu, Japan. The denim jacket, refined – cut closer to the body than a traditional trucker, it holds its own over a t-shirt with clean lines and no excess. When the weather changes, the streamlined shape layers naturally under a shell without bulk. Workwear heritage, modern sensibility.

Unlike our raw indigo versions, the Ecru undergoes a 45-minute rinse wash before it reaches you – softening the fabric from day one without compromising its character. It wears immediately, and continues to develop with time.

Finished with branded brass hardware, and chain-stitched throughout.

Crafted in China – not as you'd expect.

Five years ago, our Japanese denim maker set up a small factory in China with a single ambition: to pass the Japanese way of working to a new generation of makers. Thirty workers. The same standards, the same rigour, the same obsession with craft that defines everything made in Okayama.

We chose to be part of that. Because good craft deserves to continue – wherever it takes root. Craftsmanship has no postcode.

A note on sizing. The Birch is cut to fit close to the body. Select your regular size – but if you prefer a little more room to layer, size up.

A bi-swing pleat across the back adds flex through the shoulder for ease of movement. A design feature borrowed from classic American leather jackets, hunting attire, and heritage workwear.

Pocket layout inspired by a 1960s Buckaroo trucker jacket in Adam's vintage archive. The reference that shaped the Birch from the beginning.

Selvedge stitching runs down the inside of the placket – a detail most will never see. A quiet nod to the craftsmanship and denim history that goes into every Birch jacket.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Birch fit?
The Birch is cut closer to the body than a traditional denim jacket – less boxy, more tailored through the chest and shoulders. It's designed to layer over a shirt or t-shirt and sit cleanly under a shell jacket without bulk. If you're between sizes or prefer more room to move, size up.

Will it always feel stiff?
No. The Raw Indigo will feel firm on day one – that's the starch used during weaving, not just the weight of the fabric. As you wear it, that starch loosens and the jacket begins to soften and mould to your shape. After the first wash it softens significantly and continues to improve with time. The Ecru has already undergone a rinse wash, so it arrives softer from the start.

Will it shrink when washed?
Yes, mainly in the length and body. Wash at 30°C and hang dry – avoid the tumble dryer. If you're on the cusp between sizes and plan to wash it, size up before you do.

How should I wash it (and how often)?
Turn it inside out, wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle with a denim-specific detergent, and hang dry. For the Raw Indigo, hold off the first wash as long as possible if you want stronger, more defined fades. It's made to be worn, not preserved – but the longer you wear it before washing, the more character it develops.

What's special about Japanese selvedge denim?
The same fabric used in our jeans. Japan adopted American denim as part of its post-war clothing culture, then took the craft to an obsessive level. Mills like Kuroki and Collect in Okayama focus on narrow shuttle looms, small-batch production and depth of colour – prioritising character and longevity over volume. Beautiful fades, serious durability, and a level of precision that honours the craft properly.

What does "sanforized" mean?
Our denim is sanforized – pre-treated to stabilise shrinkage before it's cut and sewn. In practice this means more predictable sizing and less dramatic shrinking after the first wash. You'll still get some tightening, particularly in the body and length, but nothing like the extreme shrink of vintage unsanforized cloth.
